“Accrued PTO in excess of 80 hours will be forfeited” - says the handbook…. and emphasized repeatedly by our lovely HR Rep. This mini 3 day vacation or moreso “staycation” is nowhere near overdue, but selecting the right days is tricky when you’re bombarded with to do lists. And it would be a terrible shame for me to let these excess hours go to waste. Ironically, I may be wasting them at the moment.. considering I’m thinking about work.
It’s been only 8 months into this position, and I must say that my experience thus far has been one heck of a whirlwind. Never had I imagined myself constantlyasking the clock to add another 8 hours to the day just so that I could do more work. It’s just that I prefer to understand what I do, BEFORE I do it. There, I feel as if the mantra is: Get your work done now, understand it all later (i.e. when you’re lucky to find the time). And I apparently am struggling to find sufficient time after hours. To many people, this procedure of adaptation is already the norm. In fact, many may think I’m only in the novice stages of experiencing the “real world”. Or maybe I’ve been thrown into this ridiculously complex work environment thus explaining the annual waves of employee resignations. Well, whatever the case may be, I have to remember that this opportunity IS a blessing. I am surrounded by brilliant, innovative, overly ambitious, and philanthropic individuals. They are my mentors, my colleagues… and I am so very grateful to learn from such a great network. I just wish I knew how to be more patient, be less over analytical, and grew tougher skin. Wikihow time. Then, on to the main agenda of staycation: catch up on some z’s.
